This is Sawyer working with his therapist Kristi. Kristi is amazing and we are so grateful to have her work with Sawyer. She works with Sawyer 3 hours a day Monday-Friday. She has more patience than anyone I know. She never complains when Sawyer has a bad day and all he wants to do is throw a fit. There are days she has to do tough love and other days that Sawyer just loves her to pieces.
We are facing reality that Sawyer will probably not be able to communicate verbally or it will be limited. This is why I have made a big point to make sure he has everything he needs in order to communicate. This is him with his mini ipad. I made a harness so that he can wear it anywhere. On the front it has 9 different icons that help him communicate socially. He can say hello, goodbye, what is your name, my name is Sawyer, lets do something else, I want to play, help, lets go, and Please give me my PODD book I have more to say.
This is Sawyer's main form of communication. I made this book. It is called a PODD book. With this he can communicate almost anything. It has about 100 pages with navigation tabs. I don't think I have found something that we can not talk about through the PODD book. Right now I am mostly modelling everything for him. Pointing to the pictures and saying what they mean and navigating through the book to talk about what we are doing or how Sawyer feels. At times he will open the book and flip through the pages till he finds what he wants and will point to it. He can tell us how he feels, what he wants, pretend play, and tell us what he thinks about things. This goes everywhere with us. I strap it on me just like a purse.
